Local climate
- USDA hardiness zone
- 8a (10°F to 15°F)
- Typical temperature range
- Average monthly temperatures in Newberry run from a 35°F low in January to a 91°F high in July.
- Terrain
- Newberry is the Newberry County seat, sitting at about 541 feet in the hilly Piedmont roughly 43 miles northwest of Columbia, with the Broad River to the east and the Saluda to the south.
- Growing challenge
- Newberry sits on Piedmont clay soils, a sandy loam surface over a subsoil that can run 35 to 70 percent clay, and strongly acidic with it. That drains slowly and resists pH correction. The fix is organic matter, not sand. Sand worked into clay can set up firmer than the clay was.
